Martini Marathon Day 19 – The Mustached Gentleman

The Mustached Gentleman is Happy!

It’s Movember! You know, the month previously known as November, where man grow mustaches to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues. If you don’t know about Movember, I urge you to visit the website where you will find valuable information on the goals of this event.

I am participating in this year’s campaign, trying to amass as much money as I can by growing an awesome ‘stache. I usually proudly wear a full beard, and shaving on Movember 1st was difficult. But it’s for a good cause and I gladly did it for my Fathers, Brothers, Friends and myself. Nobody is safe from cancer.

For the occasion, I’ve created the following cocktail which is at the same time my 19th martini of the marathon. This manly drink explodes with flavors and will, for sure, make your facial hair grow faster (works on man only! 😉 ). Try it, and if you liked it, please make a contribution to the cause. Any sized donation is welcomed and greatly appreciated! Visit my mo-space on the Movember site and hit the “donate to me” button. On behalf of all men, I thank you very much! 😀

The Mustached Gentleman

Ingredients

  • 1 Part Gin
  • 1 Part Cognac (or Brandy)
  • 1/2 Part Sweet Vermouth
  • 1/4 Part Amaretto
  • 2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • Lemon Peel for Rim
  • A Cocktail Onion for Garnish

Preparation

Start by getting a large peel of lemon, twist it to get to precious essential oil out and use it to rim your chilled martini glass. Then discard it (the peel not the glass!).

Pour the Gin, Cognac (or any other fine Brandy), Sweet Vermouth and Amaretto in a shaker filled with cracked ice. Shake vigorously with all your masculinity until ice cold. Pour into the lemon-rimmed martini glass. Add 2 dashes of angostura bitters and garnish with a cocktail onion.

Enjoy!

Martini Marathon Day 9 – Paisley Martini

The Paisley Martini (can also use an old-fashioned glass)

When I saw this martini recipe involving Scotch Whisky, I was excited and … doubtful. When it comes to scotch, I prefer it neat or on the rocks. The result turned out to be pretty good :).

Paisley Martini

  • 2 parts Gin
  • 1/2 part Dry Vermouth
  • 1 tsp Scotch Whisky
  • Twist of lemon peel

Pour all ingredients except the lemon in a shaker and shake well. Strain into a martini glass  or an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel.

Enjoy!

Martini Marathon Day 3 – Emerald Martini

Emerald Martini

Today felt like green.

Emerald Martini

  • 3 parts Gin
  • 1 part Dry Vermouth
  • 1/4 part Green Chartreuse
  • Lemon Peel

Pour all the ingredients in a shaker with cracked ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Twist a lemon zest over the drink and float the zest on top.

Chartreuse is a liqueur made from 130 different plants! wow! There is a yellow and a green Chartreuse, be careful to use the Green Chartreuse for this recipe. Don’t ask me to describe you the taste though, the blend is very unique and I have a hard time finding something that tastes like it, except maybe jagermeister? (The comparison seems wrong). One thing is sure though, it doesn’t take much of the stuff in a cocktail. The flavor is very potent!

Enjoy!

Martini Marathon Day 2 – Third Degree Martini

Third Degree Martini

Ever tried Pernod? I tried it for the first time this evening and I have to say that I like the Anise Liqueur with the eery green glow. It’s a perfect ingredient to blend with Gin and Vermouth.

So what about the Third Degree Martini? I enjoyed it! The Anise Liqueur makes this martini tastes a bit like absinth on the first note, without the warmth of the absinth of course :). As the taste fades away, the Anise and Gin aromas disappear smoothly without any aftertastes. Don’t get me wrong though, it is a strong drink that will not please to everyone.

Third Degree Martini

  • 3 parts Gin
  • 1 part Dry Vermouth
  • 1/2 part Pernod
  • Star Anise for Garnish

Pour all the ingredients in a shaker with cracked ice and shake well (big surprise 😉 ). Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with Star Anise.

Enjoy!

Martini Marathon Day 1: The Vesper

James Bond`s Martini

Oh yeah! My holidays are starting soon, like really soon…they are starting right about…now! It is thus time to tell you about the challenge I’ve thrown in my own face: the Martini Marathon! For the next month or so, in which I’m off work (yeah I know, amazing right! sorry guys at the office, don’t hate me 😉 ), I will try a new martini recipe each single day and post it here. When I say martini, I use the word very loosely, what I mean is cocktails that are similar to Martinis…anyway, you’ll see, I’m pretty much making the rules as I go.

For today I really wanted to make the Martinez, which is the grand-father of the Martini. It would’ve been quite appropriate to start with it. Unfortunately I can’t! Ingredients for this old cocktail are rare and hard to find (in the short-term anyway). But this is a story for another time. Instead, tonight I choose a Martini I like very much: the Vesper, also known as the James Bond’s Martini.

For me, this is an all time classic. It’s cold, large, strong and tastes so good. Here is the recipe:

The Vesper (or James Bond’s Martini)

  • 3 parts Gin
  • 1 part Vodka
  • 1/2 part Lillet
  • Lemon peel

Pour all the ingredients in a shaker with cracked ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a large thin slice of lemon peel. Et voila! A martini à la James Bond.

By the way, Lillet is a french aperitif wine that isn’t too hard to find.

Enjoy!

VG Cocktail: Gin Rickey (L.A. Noire)

Gin Rickey

My fiancée and I are currently enjoying L.A. Noire for Xbox 360. It is pretty good: the characters are interesting, the story is well written and has intrigue, it’s full of clichés that had to be there. The gameplay is simple but solid: interview suspects, collect clues, drive around L.A. and shoot bad guys. It reminds me of old point and click adventures, which is a good thing!

The cocktail for today actually comes from the game. Without spoiling anything for you, at some point there is a clue, a bar tab, with classic cocktails of the time (mostly whiskey based ;)). One of them is a classic I never had the chance to try: the Gin Rickey. It is incredibly refreshing! If you like Gin tonics, you are going to love this one!

Gin Rickey

  • 2 parts Gin
  • 1 part Lime juice
  • Carbonated Water
  • Lime wedge for garnish
  • Crushed Ice

This cocktail is prepared directly in a short glass. Pour the gin and the lime juice on the crushed ice and fill the rest with carbonated water. Stir gently and add a lime wedge for garnish.

See! Pretty simple! Make yourself one for your next L.A. Noire case and enjoy! 🙂
