Spoils of war!

Ecstatic about 4 shades of gray

Last weekend, I’ve helped a good friend of mine moving from his rather large apartment, where we used to live together, to his brand new condo.

Anybody who lived in a large place knows that there are good chances you’ll amass a lot of crap you don’t need. So by moving to his new place, which is much better but also smaller, he had to throw a lot out. I gladly accepted to save some shared memories (read: steal his stuff) because that’s what friends do.

I was very excited to bring home 2 incomplete boxes of the board game “Hero Quest”, which hopefully will become one complete set once merged together. I saved Nes, Snes and n64 games, a gameboy pocket with games, my snare drum, the second pedal of my double bass drum pedal, loads of warhammer fantasy battle figurines and 2 crowns made from cardboard and duct tape…don’t ask…

A Gameboy! That’s amazing stuff! I had to sell mine when I was a boy and I’m happy to have one back! Of course my friend can always reclaim it. I won’t give it to him though…

Have fun! I will! 🙂

9 things learned from a nightmarish data loss!

Hey everyone! I notice that I haven’t posted anything here since November…and it’s for a good reason I assure you! I’ve been working extra hard on Soulsoup, a video game project. I had it scheduled for release in July and it was going very well with the “no distractions aloud” policy. But on one of my daily trip to the coffee shop to get some fuel, my laptop unexpectedly stopped and crash! My hard drive failed! Anybody who lived this experience knows about the instantaneous panic that ensues when you realize you just lost months of work in a flash. Losing data is a gutting experience and to be sure I never live it again, here are the things I learned:

1.Your PC WILL fail. As sure as you’ll die someday. It’s reality, machine breaks, even top of the line ones. Don’t trust your machines.

2.Data recovery is not for the normal user. Some companies and labs specialize in data recovery from failed hard drive and can even guaranty they will recover your precious photos and document. It might be true but you’ll have to spend a lot of money to get them back. I got quotes from 10 different companies from all over the world and their prices where all located between 800$ and 2000$. The price vary on the amount of data to recover, the type of drive and the type of failure.

3.Try Home remedies. Sometime, you can recover the data yourself. There are so many help forum on the web you can use. The key is to diagnostic your failing hard drive and to be sure you know what the problem is. If your drive turns and doesn’t make any clicking or grinding noises, there are good chances your data is still in good shape. If you have nothing more to lose and are about to throw your hard drive in the bin, you might as well try these first.

4.Let go. At some point, you need to stop thinking about what you’ve lost. The negative emotions will eat all your precious energy you need to build a new project. When you’ve tried everything, let go, and never think about it again.

5.Do your backups! And do them as often as you can based on their importance. In my case, I will backup my projects every day, my photos and other documents once a week and my music once a month.

6. Do your damn backups. Seriously! How many times did my friends, family, windows reminder and my cats told me to do mine and there was always something more important fun to do, right? The best way to make it happen is to use a software that will automate the process. It takes only an hour to set up and you’ll have security and peace of mind. Try Syncback, it’s free and does a very good job.

7.Sync. Syncing is another way to say backup. Syncing your important data every day is the key to never get frustrated by data lost. By syncing all your devices, you ensure that the most up to date data is stored everywhere and accessible anywhere.

8.Store your data in many places. In cases of extreme events like fire, tornadoes and thievery, your data might get destroyed physically. A fire will not spare your back up drive. So either use a safe-box resistant to fire and water, use a free cloud service such as Amazon Cloud Drive  or ask a friend/family to store one of your back up drive in his home.

9.Share, don’t be secretive. Which I’ll do in the future! I was waiting you see…The last month on my project (which I lost) was all about polishing the visuals of the game so I could start showing it off. Of course it was never good enough so I waited. Now I lost it and I wish I’ve shared it. Sharing is another sort of back up as you’ll be able to track back at least a part of your assets. Once something is on the web it’s practically indestructible.

I am still recovering from this painful loss which has made me depressed and unproductive for 2 weeks. A friend of mine suggested I should start working on something new instead of going back right away to Soulsoup to rebuild what I’ve lost. I think it’s a good advice and it will give me time to attempt every home remedies I still have to try. (I am currently waiting for hard drive pieces to show up by mail.) I will post news on this new project as soon as I have something to show!

What the hell were you doing man?

I was watching this blog getting dustier by the seconds, that’s what :).

Seriously, I’ve been extremely busy this summer, slowly but steadily adapting to my fatherhood life. Any parent can tell you, Life is hectic. For me it’s the LONG daily commute, working hard for a game studio, preparing my next session as a mentor, taking care of and having fun with my lovely wife and kid, working on the house, training to stay sharp and healthy… All this without forgetting fun and friends, which I miss horribly sometimes.

I have less and less time for myself and for my personal projects and hobbies, even though my wife is doing everything to give me the most. It feels like life is finally saying: “Hey! You’re not a kid anymore. You want to achieve something, plan and work for it dammit!”

Well, Good.

Don’t get me wrong, I am having fun everyday, at work and at home with my family that I love more than anything. It’s a matter of re-balancing my schedule to please every facet of my life. Some do this pretty well without even having to think about it. It’s not my case, but I am learning! Basically, I learn to enjoy every moment to its fullest. For example, if I can play guitar for 2 minutes and play with my baby girl for 2 hours, it’s going to be the best 2 minutes of guitar and the best 2 hours with my kid. It’s not about time, it’s about quality.

So apart from that, what the hell have I been doing this summer?

Anytime I have a free hour, at lunch time, or at night when my wife and kid have gone to sleep, I jump on my laptop to work on a personal project. These times, I’ve been having fun with a little puzzle game which I’ll write about pretty soon, a cool experience to test my recent life-style changes.

It feels like I haven’t been writing here since spring, and it does! I’ll be trying to get back on track and come here as often as possible to share. This blog serves this purpose primarily, it pushes me to share my work, and not keep it for myself, I am a bit on the shy side. 🙂

Until then, have fun!

Exciting things are coming!

Wow! What a crazy week! I’ve just started this blog (and I know I’m the only one reading it hehe), but I still want to make the occasional post, you know like, at least once a week. But I had very little time lately to write anything. Actually I’ve been working on a couple of projects in parallel.

First and most important, I am preparing the fourth version of the beer game “Drink up!”. Yep, this Friday is beer game night and we will playtest this new and improved, and most importantly more appealing, version of “Drink up !”.

We will be 8 players sitting around the table which is an ideal number, the turns aren’t too fast or too slow. We will throw dices and make each other drink like crazy :D. The game is quite simple to understand even though it has a lot of surprise! At each of our turn we roll a 20 sided dice and live with the corresponding consequence written on our list. There are various effects from the basic drink X sip to make someone finish his beer. But the thing that interest us the most are the level ups. As you see, each time you level up, your table of consequence changes for the best and you get more chances to make your friends roll under the table!

I have also been working on a pixel art that takes a lot of time. I will present it here shortly, but I want to keep it a surprise until then. I’ve also started a little game on the side that should be simple and quick to develop, but with a newborn at home and of course my day job that’s a bit crazy these days, I have less time then usual.

Anyways, stay tuned ! Exciting things are coming, I promise! ;P
